The Portal That Chose Tork
Tork Maddox knew something was wrong before Hollowback Car ever reached the portal. Racing Realms didn’t usually wait for one particular driver, but this one seemed to be doing exactly that. The portal had appeared without warning, hanging open inside the AcceleDrome while the other drivers gathered around it. Nobody had received the usual information about what waited on the other side. There was no indication of the terrain, no clue about the skill the Realm might test and no explanation for why the portal wasn’t closing.
Tork stared at it from behind the wheel of the Hot Wheels Acceleracers Hollowback car and felt something he rarely admitted to anyone: hesitation. After everything the drivers had already encountered, an unexplained portal wasn’t an invitation. It was a warning.
Vert Wheeler told him they should wait until Tezla figured out what was happening, but waiting wasn’t exactly how the Metal Maniacs operated. Tork fired Hollowback’s engine and watched the portal ripple in front of him. Then something appeared on his dashboard that hadn’t come from the AcceleDrome. DRIVER IDENTIFIED — TORK MADDOX. A second message followed almost immediately: LOYALTY RESPONSE — BEGIN TEST.
Tork didn’t know what the words meant, but somewhere inside the Silencerz network, the same phrase had already appeared after Iridium discovered that the Racing Realms were studying the drivers. Nolo had been tested through his competitiveness. RD-06 had been tested through obedience. Now something had chosen Tork.
Tork accelerated before anyone could stop him. The Hollowback Car disappeared through the portal and landed hard on a cracked roadway cutting through a mountainous wasteland. Jagged cliffs rose on both sides while enormous pieces of broken highway hung suspended over deep ravines. Tork immediately noticed something else. Another vehicle was already racing several hundred yards ahead of him. He recognized it instantly. Jack Hammer. Porkchop was inside, and the rear of the vehicle was throwing sparks as it struggled to stay on the road. Tork hit the accelerator. Whatever this Realm wanted from him, one thing was already obvious. One of his people was in trouble.
Every Road Had a Price
Tork caught Jack Hammer near the entrance to a narrow canyon. Porkchop’s vehicle had taken heavy damage, and the steering was barely responding. Tork pulled alongside while both cars fought across a roadway that looked like it had been assembled from pieces of different tracks. Porkchop shouted over the radio that he’d entered the portal only seconds before Tork, although nobody at the AcceleDrome had seen him leave. T
hat made no sense. Tork had been standing near Porkchop when the portal appeared. The real Porkchop couldn’t possibly be inside the Realm. Yet the voice on the radio sounded right, the damaged Jack Hammer looked right and the driver behind the wheel knew things only Porkchop should have known.
The road divided ahead. A bright green route continued toward what appeared to be the finish portal, while the other path descended sharply into a collapsing industrial complex. Jack Hammer’s damaged steering suddenly locked and sent Porkchop toward the lower road. Tork’s dashboard flashed another message: PRIMARY ROUTE IDENTIFIED. CONTINUE FORWARD. He had a clear path toward completing the Realm. Following Porkchop would mean abandoning it. Tork didn’t hesitate. Hollowback car slammed across the divider and followed Jack Hammer down into the industrial complex.
The lower route immediately punished him for the decision. Sections of roadway collapsed behind the two vehicles while huge steel beams crashed from above. Tork maneuvered Hollowback beside Jack Hammer and tried pushing the damaged car away from the edge of the track. Every time he helped Porkchop, he lost speed. Every time he lost speed, the Realm became more dangerous. The message on his dashboard changed: MISSION COMPLETION PROBABILITY: 41 PERCENT. ABANDON SECONDARY VEHICLE. Tork ignored it. The percentage dropped to thirty-three, then twenty-six. Tork didn’t care. Metal Maniacs didn’t leave Metal Maniacs behind.
That was exactly what the Realm wanted to learn.
The Friend Who Wasn’t There
The industrial road eventually reached a huge platform suspended over a canyon. Jack Hammer rolled to a stop. The Hollowback Car stopped beside it, and Tork climbed out expecting to find Porkchop injured. Instead, Porkchop stepped from the vehicle looking perfectly fine. That was the first thing that bothered Tork. The second was the expression on his face. Porkchop wasn’t angry, scared or laughing about nearly getting killed. He simply stood there watching Tork as if he were waiting for something.
Porkchop told Tork that Jack Hammer couldn’t continue and that they would have to finish the Realm together in the Hollowback car. Tork agreed, but as they approached the car, his dashboard illuminated again. ADDITIONAL MASS WILL PREVENT COMPLETION. ONE DRIVER ONLY. Porkchop saw the warning and told Tork to ignore it. Tork almost laughed. Ignoring instructions was practically a Metal Maniacs tradition. Then Porkchop said something that stopped him cold. He told Tork that if he was really loyal, he would give him Hollowback car and stay behind.
Tork stared at him. Loyalty didn’t mean blindly doing whatever somebody demanded. It didn’t mean sacrificing yourself because someone used friendship as leverage. Tork had spent years carrying responsibility for the people around him, and the Realm had apparently mistaken that responsibility for a weakness it could exploit. He looked at Jack Hammer again and noticed details he’d ignored during the race. The damage was wrong. The scratches along the doors weren’t where they should have been. Even the engine sounded slightly different. The Realm hadn’t brought Porkchop into the race. It had built something that looked like him.
Tork stepped away from the imitation. “You ain’t Porkchop.”
For the first time, the fake driver smiled.
Loyalty Isn’t Obedience
The entire platform changed. Jack Hammer dissolved into thousands of glowing fragments, and the figure pretending to be Porkchop disappeared with it. The roadway behind Tork vanished, leaving the Hollowback car alone on a narrow strip of pavement leading toward another section of the Realm. A message appeared on the dashboard: LOYALTY RESPONSE INCOMPLETE. Tork climbed back behind the wheel and accelerated. Now he understood what was happening. This place wasn’t testing whether he could drive. It was testing how far he could be manipulated by the people he cared about.
The Realm tried again. Voices came through Hollowback’s radio. Monkey screamed that he was trapped somewhere ahead. Porkchop demanded that Tork turn around. Even Nolo’s voice appeared, accusing Tork of abandoning his team. Each transmission sounded authentic, and each one tried to pull him away from the route he had chosen. Tork shut off the radio. The messages immediately moved to the dashboard instead. TEAM MEMBER IN DANGER. CHANGE COURSE. Hollowback car continued forward.
That didn’t mean Tork had stopped caring about his people. It meant he had finally recognized the difference between loyalty and manipulation. Real loyalty required judgment. Sometimes helping somebody meant following them into danger. Sometimes it meant refusing to follow them at all. The Realm had expected Tork’s devotion to the Metal Maniacs to make him predictable, just as Nolo’s competitiveness had made him predictable and RD-06’s obedience had once made the Drone predictable. Instead, Tork began making decisions based on what he knew rather than what the Realm wanted him to feel.
The Hollowback car blasted through the final series of obstacles as the roadway collapsed around it. Ahead, a portal opened. Tork didn’t need another instruction. He buried the accelerator and drove straight toward it.
The Real Test Was Still Coming
The Hollowback car emerged inside the AcceleDrome and skidded across the floor. Tork climbed out expecting questions, but Porkchop was already walking toward him. The real Porkchop had never entered the Realm. He’d watched Tork disappear through the portal with everyone else. Tork looked at him for several seconds before finally accepting that the man standing in front of him was genuine. Porkchop wanted to know what happened. Tork told him he’d explain later.
Inside the Hollowback car the, the computer activated without anyone touching it. The same file that had appeared inside RD-06 began loading onto the screen: BEHAVIORAL RESPONSE INDEX. Tork read the entries. Porkchop’s force response had been tested. The Silencerz driver’s dependence on technology had been tested. Nolo’s competitive response had been tested. RD-06’s autonomous response had been tested. Now another line had been added: TORK MADDOX — LOYALTY RESPONSE — TESTED. ADAPTATION DETECTED.
Tork stared at the final words. The Realm hadn’t simply been testing whether he was loyal. It had been measuring whether he could recognize when that loyalty was being used against him. More disturbing was what the growing list suggested. Someone—or something—was building profiles of every racer entering the Realms. Their strengths weren’t the only things being recorded. Their weaknesses, instincts, relationships and decision-making patterns were being cataloged as well.
A final entry appeared at the bottom of the screen.
BATTLE SPEC — RISK RESPONSE — PENDING.
Across the AcceleDrome, Kurt Wylde’s Battle Spec sat untouched beneath the lights. Its computer suddenly activated. A series of coordinates appeared on the display, followed by a countdown.
Tork looked across the room toward the Teku vehicle.
Whatever was controlling the Realms wasn’t waiting for the racers to find the next challenge anymore.
It was choosing who came next.
The Mattel History of Hollowback
Hollowback Car was introduced by Mattel in 2005 as part of the original Hot Wheels AcceleRacers line. Designed by Phil Riehlman, it was an original Hot Wheels fantasy casting created specifically for the AcceleRacers era and released as #5 of the nine Metal Maniacs vehicles, with the original toy number G8097. The first releases featured the distinctive red/satin-red body, Metal Maniacs graphics and co-molded wheels.
The Hollowback Car was also tied directly into Mattel’s AcceleRacers entertainment universe, where it was the signature vehicle of Metal Maniacs leader Tork Maddox. Its exaggerated muscle-car design featured an exposed V8, side exhausts and an aggressive stance that visually separated the Metal Maniacs from the more technologically styled Teku and Silencerz vehicles.
Unlike some AcceleRacers designs that disappeared after the original promotion, Mattel continued using the Hollowback Car casting after 2005. It subsequently appeared in lines including Track Stars, Connect Cars, Super Chromes, Road Rally, Track Aces, Mystery Models and other Hot Wheels releases, giving Hollowback a life well beyond the original AcceleRacers series.
One correction worth making on your existing Hollowback product page: it currently says Taro Kitano drove Hollowback. That’s incorrect—TorkMaddox drove Hollowback car. Taro is associated with other vehicles.The
