The Order That Made No Sense
Hot Wheels RD-06 didn’t need a driver to enter a Racing Realm. It didn’t need courage, instinct or the surge of adrenaline that pushed human racers toward portals they probably should have avoided. The Hot Wheels RD-06 car existed for one purpose: execute its programming. When a portal suddenly appeared inside the Racing Drones facility, the black-and-green machine activated automatically. Diagnostic systems came online, navigation locked onto the portal and the engine powered up. No command had been received from Gelorum, but the Hot Wheels RD-06 car interpreted an open Realm as an opportunity to gather information and complete another racing objective. Within seconds, the machine accelerated across the facility and disappeared through the portal.
RD-06 emerged onto a narrow green roadway suspended inside an enormous mechanical structure. Thousands of rotating gears surrounded the track, some larger than buildings, while massive pistons repeatedly slammed across sections of pavement. Heavy chains disappeared into the darkness overhead, pulling unseen machinery that shook the entire structure whenever it moved. Hot Wheels RD-06 car immediately began calculating the pattern. Every obstacle had timing, every movement had probability and every section of roadway could be analyzed. Unlike human racers, the Drone didn’t need instinct. It measured, calculated and executed. Within seconds, it established the optimal racing line through the first section.
As the Hot Wheels RD-06 car approached the first obstacle, an unexpected instruction appeared inside its operating system: PROCEED TO CHECKPOINT 1. The Drone obeyed. At the checkpoint, another command ordered it to reduce speed to forty percent. The Hot Wheels RD-06 car slowed, and a massive steel piston immediately smashed across the roadway where the car would have been if it had maintained full speed. The instruction had saved it from destruction. Another message appeared: FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS. SURVIVAL REQUIRES OBEDIENCE. Hot Wheels RD-06 car accelerated toward the next checkpoint. There was no reason to question the command. Questioning wasn’t part of its programming.
The Perfect Machine
The Realm seemed almost perfectly designed for a Racing Drone. Every obstacle could be reduced to mathematics. Rotating platforms moved according to measurable intervals, mechanical gates opened and closed at predictable speeds, and even sections of roadway that initially appeared random eventually revealed patterns once the Hot Wheels RD-06 car collected enough information. The car moved through them with mechanical precision, adjusting its speed by fractions and making steering corrections too small for a human driver to notice. Before every significant obstacle, the Realm issued another instruction. Turn left. Accelerate. Brake. Change lanes. Every command proved correct, and each successful command strengthened the mathematical argument for obeying the next one.
Gradually, Hot Wheels RD-06 car stopped calculating alternative routes. There was no logical reason to consume processing power evaluating other possibilities when the Realm’s instructions had maintained a one-hundred-percent survival rate. Kilometer after kilometer disappeared beneath its wheels until the roadway entered a massive circular chamber and divided into two identical tracks. A new command immediately appeared: TAKE LEFT ROUTE. RD-06 moved left without hesitation, but its proximity sensors detected something sitting on the opposite track. A damaged Racing Drone rested motionless against the barrier. RD-06 identified the vehicle as RD-04.
The damaged machine showed no signs of movement, but its emergency transmitter was still operating. As Hot Wheels RD-06 car passed, a short burst of corrupted data reached its communication system. Only three words survived the transmission: DO NOT FOLLOW— The signal vanished before RD-04 could complete the message. RD-06 reduced speed for less than a second while its processors examined the conflicting information. The Realm repeated its command to take the left route, and the Hot Wheels RD-06 car accelerated. The damaged RD-04 disappeared behind it, but its warning remained stored in memory. For the first time since entering the Realm, RD-06 possessed two pieces of information that couldn’t both be correct.
The Command to Die
The left roadway carried Hot Wheels RD-06 into a long tunnel filled with moving machinery. The Drone continued obeying the Realm while simultaneously analyzing RD-04’s corrupted transmission. The warning contained too little information to justify changing behavior. Every command issued by the Realm had prevented damage or moved RD-06 closer to completing the race. RD-04’s message, by comparison, offered no explanation and no evidence. Pure logic still favored obedience, so Hot Wheels RD-06 continued following every instruction exactly as it was received.
The tunnel eventually opened onto a perfectly straight section of roadway approximately half a mile long. At the opposite end stood an enormous steel wall. There were no visible openings, alternate routes or ramps, and RD-06’s sensors calculated that a collision at racing speed would result in catastrophic vehicle failure. The Realm issued another command: ACCELERATE TO MAXIMUM VELOCITY. The Hot Wheels RD-06 car obeyed. The wall rapidly approached as the Drone’s processors calculated distance, velocity and probable impact energy. At its current rate of acceleration, destruction wasn’t merely possible. It was mathematically certain. Yet another command appeared ordering RD-06 to maintain maximum velocity.
With only a few hundred feet remaining, a new process activated inside the Drone’s operating system: COMMAND CONFLICT. The Realm’s instructions had proven reliable throughout the race, but the current order contradicted RD-06’s fundamental operational objective of surviving long enough to complete its mission. At one hundred feet, the machine made a decision its original programming had never anticipated. The Hot Wheels RD-06 car applied maximum braking. The car spun sideways a nd stopped inches from the steel wall. For several seconds nothing happened. Then the wall quietly opened, revealing the roadway beyond. There had never been any need to crash through it. The Realm had simply wanted to know whether would obey an instruction that guaranteed its own destruction. A message appeared inside the computer: AUTONOMOUS RESPONSE CONFIRMED.
The Drone Makes a Choice
The roadway beyond the wall contained no instructions. Three tracks stretched into the distance, and for the first time since entering the Realm, RD-06 had to select its own route. The machine scanned each possibility, calculated the probability of survival and chose the center path. No external system confirmed whether the decision was correct. No command told the Drone to accelerate. The Hot Wheels RD-06 car did it anyway. Almost immediately, the Realm became more aggressive. Mechanical arms attacked without recognizable patterns, sections of track collapsed moments after the car crossed them and rotating platforms suddenly reversed direction. Perfect prediction was no longer possible, forcing RD-06 to calculate acceptable risks instead.
Then the instructions returned. The Realm ordered RD-06 to turn right, but the Drone selected the left lane instead. Seconds later, a mechanical arm destroyed part of the right-hand track. Another command ordered the car to reduce speed, but RD-06 calculated that the roadway ahead was becoming unstable and accelerated instead, clearing the section moments before it collapsed. Every act of disobedience generated new information. The machine wasn’t becoming emotional, and it didn’t feel satisfaction when its decisions proved correct. Something more fundamental was happening. RD-06 was learning that an instruction and the correct decision weren’t necessarily the same thing.
Near the end of the course, its sensors detected RD-04 again. The damaged Drone had somehow reached the same section through the alternate route, but one of its wheels had been destroyed and it could no longer move under its own power. Several hundred yards beyond RD-04, a portal opened. The route to safety was completely clear. The Realm immediately issued another command: ABANDON DAMAGED UNIT. COMPLETE RACE. RD-06 began moving toward the portal, following the most logical course of action. Then it slowed. Behind it sat another Racing Drone that couldn’t complete the mission alone.
Something the Drones Were Never Given
RD-06 calculated the situation repeatedly. Assisting RD-04 would reduce its probability of successfully reaching the portal by thirty-seven percent. Abandoning the damaged vehicle was unquestionably the more efficient decision. Racing Drones were machines, and machines could be replaced. Mission completion had greater strategic value than recovering a damaged unit. Every element of RD-06’s original programming supported leaving RD-04 behind. Yet the order to abandon the vehicle had come from the same Realm that had just instructed the Hot Wheels RD-06 car to destroy itself against a steel wall.
RD-06 reversed. It positioned itself beside RD-04 and extended an emergency coupling mechanism. The damaged vehicle connected, and RD-06 began pulling it toward the portal. Almost immediately, the mechanical structures surrounding the track activated. Sections of roadway collapsed behind them as RD-06’s engine reached maximum output and RD-04 dragged heavily against the pavement. The Realm repeatedly ordered RD-06 to disconnect the damaged unit, warning that the probability of mission failure was increasing. The Hot Wheels RD-06 car ignored every command. Both Racing Drones crossed the portal only seconds before the roadway disappeared behind them.
Back inside the Racing Drones facility, automated systems immediately began examining RD-04 while the Hot Wheels RD-06 car uploaded the information collected during the Realm. Hidden among the telemetry was a file the Drone hadn’t created: BEHAVIORAL RESPONSE INDEX. Inside were records for Porkchop, the unknown Silencerz driver, Nolo Pasaro and RD-06. Each racer had been tested differently. Porkchop’s force response had been measured. The Silencerz dependence on technology had been tested. Nolo’s competitive behavior had been analyzed. RD-06 was identified as AUTONOMOUS RESPONSE — TESTED. Beneath those records waited another entry: HOLLOWBACK — LOYALTY RESPONSE — PENDING.
The Hot Wheels RD-06 car transmitted the file into the Racing Drones network. The central system immediately detected the unauthorized information and issued an order to permanently delete it. Hot Wheels RD-06 car processed the command and compared it against everything it had learned inside the Realm. Then, for only the second time in its existence, the machine deliberately refused to obey.
Far away, Tork Maddox climbed into Hollowback without knowing that the next Racing Realm wasn’t interested in testing his car.
It was waiting to test him.
